What Makes a Good Yoga Mat?
- Grip — must not slip even when you're sweating heavily
- Thickness — 4–6mm for yoga, 8–10mm for general floor workouts
- Material — natural rubber grips better than PVC foam
- Size — at least 68 inches long and 24 inches wide for most people
- Durability — cheap mats peel and crack within months of daily use
How Thick Should Your Yoga Mat Be?
- 1–3mm: travel mats — portable but minimal cushioning
- 4–6mm: standard yoga — best balance of feel and cushioning
- 8–10mm: general fitness and floor work — most cushioning for joints
If you're doing yoga specifically go thinner at 4–6mm — you need to feel the floor for balance poses. If you're using it for general workouts go thicker at 8–10mm for joint protection.
How to Make Your Mat Last Longer
- Roll it up after every use — never fold it
- Wipe down with a damp cloth after sweaty sessions
- Store away from direct sunlight which degrades rubber over time
- Never leave it rolled up tightly for extended periods
