The Most Important Treadmill Specs Explained
Most people focus on price when buying a treadmill. But the specifications determine whether a treadmill lasts 1 year or 10. Here is what actually matters.
Motor Size — The Most Important Spec
- Under 2.0 CHP: too weak for regular use — avoid completely
- 2.0-2.5 CHP: fine for walking and occasional jogging
- 2.5-3.0 CHP: suitable for regular running up to 45 minutes
- 3.0+ CHP: best for daily intense running and heavier users
Belt Size
- Minimum for walking: 16 inches wide x 45 inches long
- Minimum for running: 20 inches wide x 55 inches long
- Ideal for tall users: 22 inches wide x 60 inches long
Incline
- Manual incline: fixed levels, must stop to adjust — acceptable on a budget
- Motorised incline: adjusts while walking or running — much better experience
- Decline capability: found only on premium models — excellent for variety
Never buy a treadmill with a motor under 2.0 CHP. Budget treadmills with weak motors burn out within months of regular use. Spend a little more for a 2.5+ CHP motor and your treadmill will last for years.
Weight Capacity
Always choose a treadmill rated for at least 50 lbs more than your bodyweight. Running creates impact forces 2-3 times your bodyweight — exceeding the weight capacity damages the motor and frame rapidly.
